Erica Hubbard: "Angela Bassett Helped My Career"
Erica Hubbard has been keeping things busy on the professional and personal front. The 32-year old starred in this year's film Dysfunctional Friends, she became a new mom to a baby girl and she just wrapped season two of BET's Let’s Stay Together.
BET.com chatted with Hubbard about playing LST's Kita, how she lost her pregnancy weight and why she loves all things Angela Bassett.
Do Let’s Stay Together fans ever approach you about Kita?
Yes, in fact I just wrapped a film and this lady came on set and said, "I’m so happy you’re back on Let's Stay Together, you don’t know just how much I missed you." People treat me like Kita is someone in their family. I’ve had so many people come up to me and say, "I will be her best friend, her girlfriend." And I’ve had guys tweet me that, "I would marry her."
What should we expect for the character in season three of the show?
There will be more love interests because Kita is still looking. People always ask me, "Is Kita going to settle down? She’s such a good girl, where is her love life?" A lot of people want the best for her. In creating Kita I wanted her to be approachable and down to earth — very grounded. LST takes place in Atlanta, Georgia, where you have lot hospitality so Kita had to embody that.
You’re a new mom, and one that luckily suffers from that magical post baby-snap back syndrome. How did you lose the pregnancy pounds?
I just signed up for Weight Watchers and it really works. Before that I was doing a cleanse and it was so hard. I couldn’t have any meat or anything white: no white bread, rice, pasta plus no sugar, or soda. All you could eat was fruit, vegetables and salads. And for your protein you ate beans. Doing that for me was challenging because when I went back home to Chicago they had tons of foods and desserts, fried chicken at Thanksgiving and I was like, "Oh, the battle!" When I got off the cleanse I lost 10 pounds and then I got on Weight Watchers and I lost 12 pounds. Along with walking everyday for 30 minutes, that’s what I do.
What’s one film every actress should see?
The one that inspires me, and I’m not just saying this because I was in it is Akeelah and the Bee. Watching Angela Bassett work with Laurence Fishburne? They’re a dynamic duo. Angela Bassett and her level of acting need an Academy Award. The way she transforms into a character is phenomenal. I just love her work. I’ve seen Laurence do Shakespeare to thugs to everything else — he has so many levels too and is so versatile. You can’t get more talented actors than Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne.
As a fan of their work, what was it like working with them?
They both gave me key fundamental tips and techniques on my acting when I was on set. Laurence hired me, and Angela gave me direction that has helped me so much in my career. I just want to thank her because she’s brilliant.
Switching gears to music, what’s on your iPod right now?
I’m listening to Adele. She’s in rotation for me — I love all of her music. I like that song "Turning Tables." I like to listen to this music before I go to work. This film I just finished is called Forbidden Woman and I had to play the forbidden woman who has an affair. So I listened to Adele to prepare, her music gets me going.
