Mumia Abu-Jamal says his health is suffering and blames prison guards for not giving him access to medical attention that could treat his condition.

On Friday, he testified to a federal judge that he wanted to see a doctor of his choosing to receive treatment for severe rashes and an increase in blood sugar levels. He filed a lawsuit against the prison seeking money as well as the right to get the treatment he desires.
Abu-Jamal said his itching "seemed to get worse and worse no matter what cream or drug or medication was prescribed. Nothing eased or cured the problem," according to the Associated Press. He added that the irritation turned bloody.

In 2012, Jamal was diagnosed with hepatitis C and a rash developed all over his body as a result of the disease. A lawyer representing the correctional facility questioned whether Abu-Jamal is "entitled" to have the care that he is demanding because his life is not at risk.

In early March, he was rushed to the hospital after suffering from diabetic shock. He says that prison doctors did not give him adequate help to stop his sugars from rising to the point.
Abu-Jamal was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Daniel Faulkner, a white Philadelphia police officer. Because of the nature of the crimes he is accused, Abu-Jamal's case has drawn much controversy and his supporters believe that he was framed and have demanded that he gets a new trial. He was a journalist who reported on police violence in Philadelphia before his arrest. He has continued to publish books and articles while imprisoned.
A jury carried out deliberations for three hours before making their decision in the former Black Panther's case. His death sentence was overturned in 2001.
