Cardi B Defends Vybz Kartel After Health Struggles Spark Online Criticism
Vybz Kartel, the dancehall icon behind chart-topping hits like "Clarks," "Fever," and "Summertime," recently regained his freedom after his murder conviction was overturned, ending more than a decade in prison.
Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, has been battling Graves' disease, a serious autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid. This condition leads to an overproduction of thyroid hormones, which can result in a range of debilitating symptoms. Among the most visible are bulging eyes (known as exophthalmos) and skin discoloration, both of which have significantly impacted Kartel’s appearance. The disease can also cause weight loss, fatigue, and heart problems, and if left untreated, it can be life-threatening.
During his time in prison, Kartel's health deteriorated. He was reportedly kept in solitary confinement for up to 23 hours a day, with limited access to fresh air and proper medical care.
Following his release, some social media users criticized Kartel’s appearance, with speculation about whether he had bleached his skin. In response, Cardi B came to his defense during an X Spaces session, passionately stating, “I do not play about f-cking Vybz Kartel… Not too much. Mind your f-cking business.”
Cardi’s remarks were a strong reminder that Kartel’s appearance is a reflection of his ongoing battle with a serious illness, rather than a cosmetic choice. Despite the physical toll of Graves' disease, Kartel remains a celebrated figure in dancehall music, with his release marking a new chapter in his life and career.
