Man Charged After Setting Woman On Fire In Possible Domestic-Related Attack
A North Carolina man has been charged after a woman was set on fire earlier this month.
As reported by CBS 17, Sanford resident Jami Raiziah Griffin, 23, was arrested on Friday, December 27, in connection with the burning of 20-year-old Ashanti Downey, according to deputies. Griffin has been charged with misdemeanor assault on a female, felony attempted first-degree murder, and felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and cause serious injury, according to court filings.
On December 16, Ashanti Downey, 20, was walking around N.C. 27 West and Barbecue Church Road in Harnett County when she was doused with gasoline and set on fire. The woman was reportedly taken to the Sanford emergency room of the Central Carolina Hospital with second- and third-degree burns on the right side of her body and is currently in critical condition.
After believing that three people were part of the attack, that’s no longer believed to be the case, and deputies have discovered that Griffin and Downey were living together at the time of the incident. Griffin is being held in the Harnett County Detention Center on a domestic violence hold without bond.
A GoFundMe has been established for Downey’s medical expenses, and her mother, Donecia Davis, shared that her daughter’s “life will be forever changed” just weeks before her 21st birthday on January 1, 2025. “No parent should have to see their child in the condition my daughter is in. I am making her my top priority and have been by her side at the hospital since this incident occurred,” the GFM description reads.
