Sometimes redistricting is a good thing for African-Americans and it definitely has been for Marc Veasey. The Texas state representative on Tuesday won a Democratic primary run-off race to represent the newly drawn 33rd Congressional District, defeating activist and political leader Domingo Garcia.

The majority-minority district covers Dallas and Fort Worth and was created after the 2010 census showed that minorities represented 89 percent of the population growth that had taken place in the state during the previous 10 years. Latinos make up a majority of the new district's population.

The contest between Veasey and Garcia was reported to be particularly intense because there was no incumbent and the obvious racial divide. But while African-Americans stood solidly behind Veasey and Latinos threw their support to Garcia, in the end, The Dallas Morning News reports, the Black vote in Fort Worth gave Veasey the edge, by 53 to 47 percent.

“Despite what the pundits said, this election was never about Dallas vs. Fort Worth. It was never about African-Americans vs. Hispanics,” he said in his victory speech. “This election was about making sure North Texans were represented fairly and honestly.”

Veasey will face off with Republican Chuck Bradley in November, and if he wins as he is predicted to do, he'll be the first African-American from Tarrant County to be sent to Congress. Garcia also had hoped to make history as the first Latino to represent North Dallas on Capitol Hill.
