Buffalo Bills' Marcell Dareus Suspended One Game for Drugs Violation
The NFL is cracking down on all violators.
On Thursday, the league announced the one-game suspension of Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, stemming from a May 2014 traffic stop and arrest for criminal possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, ESPN is reporting. Despite Dareus having entered a pretrial intervention program, so the charges can be dropped, the league's one-game suspension stands.
Dareus knows he screwed up and has apologized.
"Last year, I made a mistake involving possession of a banned substance," Dareus said in a statement, as reported by ESPN. "The NFL's discipline for this conduct is part of the drug policy, and I apologize to my family, my teammates, the entire Bills organization and Bills fans that I will miss one game as a result of my mistake. I will work intensely that week and will be extremely happy to contribute to a win in week two for the Bills."
Dareus has made the Pro Bowl the past two seasons, leading all defensive tackles in sacks in 2014 with 10. He will miss the Bills' season-opening home game against the Indianapolis Colts on September 13.
