World Trade Center Marred by Racist Graffiti

Construction workers have been vandalizing the One World Trade Center site with racist language targeting Blacks, women, Jews and others.

The newly built One World Trade Center is a mark of hope for New York City after many lost family members during the Twin Towers tragedy on Sept. 11, 2001.

But a few construction workers have shown their ugliest sides by filling the property with ignorant racist words, taking away from the message of freedom the building is supposed to symbolize. Police are now investigating.

On Monday, the New York Daily News published photos of writings of racial slurs written on plywood and other parts of the One World Trade Center site that insulted Blacks, Jews, Irish, women and glorified white power.

“Lame N------ be quiet,” one slur read.

“Where’s Obama’s Birth Certificate!!!!,” another read, taking a shot at President Obama, who some people say was not born actually born in the U.S. and has a false birth certificate.

“None Whites Only,” a misspelled message from the Jim Crow-era, was written above the urinals in the men’s bathrooms.

This offensive language is being painted over. The site has about 1,000 workers, some of whom are upset by the racist graffiti.

Tyson Patterson, a Black worker at the site felt that speaking up about the slurs would cost him his job. “I have to be political and pretend it doesn’t bother me,” Patterson told the New York Daily News.

Mayor Bloomberg has not released a statement in response to the racist graffiti. One World Trade Center is expected to open in late 2013.
