Box Office: Guardians Is Victorious Over Labor Day Weekend
Guardians of the Galaxy closes off an otherwise disappointing summer at the box office with at least one major success story. The Marvel hit once again easily took the top spot over Labor Day weekend, earning $22.2 million in its fifth week of release and becoming the top-grossing film of the year so far. The film, starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and others, is one of the few bright spots in a season that saw revenue fall to a 17-year low.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came in second place with $15.7 million and a $166.4 million domestic total to date. Teen drama If I Stay, buddy comedy Let's Be Cops — a bona fide sleeper hit with $59.7 million in total ticket sales — and new entry As Above, So Below rounded out the top five.
The Expendables 3 sunk to tenth place in its third week of release, while Brett Ratner and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's seeming surefire hit Hercules has disappeared from the top ten altogether.
Hopefully energy at the box office will pick up this fall as awards contenders roll into theaters.
