Six white students at an Alabama high school are facing backlash after a viral Snapchat photo showed them stepping on a Black student, who was lying face down, with the accompanying caption, “we got us one.”

The students, who attend Moody High School, took the picture during a school theme day wherein students had to dress up as locals of four destinations: Hawaii, New Orleans, Dallas, and Hollywood, the school's principal Christopher Walters told AL.com.

Instagram user @agirlhasnopresident was sent the photo by a student and sent it the school’s office. Screenshots of the comments posted to the photo show someone who appears to be a parent of one of the students saying "my son isn't racist and neither are these boys in this picture" and "this was a joke that was taken out of context."

Another mother told CBS42 that the students were "making fun of racist people." Nick Fuller, the Black student pictured on the ground, told the local news station, "I didn't think about it when I first took the photos. I'd still like to say sorry again for anybody that I offended."

 Austin Glass, one of the white students stepping on Nick, told CBS42, "If I could go back, I wouldn't have took the picture."

Principal Walters released a statement that said while the boys were joking, their actions do not reflect the school.

"The students involved clearly made poor decisions, and we will take appropriate disciplinary action," reads Walters' statement.

The school's superintendent Jenny Seals released another statement the said the "disturbing” photo was under investigation by school officials.

"I understand that all students involved are friends and participated voluntarily in creating the picture, which they say was intended to be a 'joke,'" she said. "Obviously, there's nothing funny about the picture. It is offensive and unacceptable, and it does not reflect the values of Moody High School, the St. Clair County School System, or our community. All students involved will be disciplined appropriately. We will continue to educate our students on the values of dignity, equality, and decency and on the importance of making good decisions in life.”
