George Zimmerman’s Behavior Tells a Story, Lawyer to Trayvon’s Parents Says
Benjamin Crump, the attorney for Trayvon Martin’s parents, said that George Zimmerman’s behavior should paint a portrait that will help most Americans forge a deeper view of his behavior in the death of the 17-year-old unarmed Florida student.
Just months after he was acquitted of second-degree murder charges in the death of Trayvon Martin, Zimmerman was arrested Monday after he pointed a shotgun at his girlfriend. He was accused of shattering a glass-top table, pushing her out of the house and barricading himself inside after she ordered him to move out, according to the law enforcement officials.
It was the second time in three months that Zimmerman was handcuffed after being accused of domestic violence and threatening a woman with a gun. His estranged wife called police about Zimmerman, saying he had threatened her and her father while holding a gun. Shellie Zimmerman declined to press charges.
In an interview with BET.com, Crump said that Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, the parents of the teenager, have been watching the events surrounding George Zimmerman’s recent runs-ins with the law.
“They are watching everything that’s going on pretty intently,” Crump said. “They are adamant that the killer of their child should be held accountable. With regard to Zimmerman, they are definitely paying attention to what’s been reported on in the news. But they are more focused on their work with the Trayvon Martin Foundation.”
He said that rather than comment directly on the views of Martin and Fulton on George Zimmerman’s recent legal troubles, it would be better to compare the post-trial behavior of Trayvon’s parents with the actions of Zimmerman.
“I just try to draw people’s attention to what Trayvon’s parents are doing with the Trayvon Martin Foundation and their work in trying to draw consciousness to the need for conflict resolution,” Crump said.
“And we ask people to compare that work to Zimmerman’s actions with regard to conflict resolution,” he added. “I think people can draw some clear distinctions about Zimmerman.”
