Serena Williams Couldn’t Care Less About Body Bullies
Around here, we’re big champions for Serena Williams. The tennis icon is an inspiration for men and women, young and old, for conquering adversity and staying true to herself. These sentiments rang especially true in a recent interview she gave the U.K.'s The Times magazine, where she opened up about dealing with hurtful comments about her curvaceous figure.
"I know I get flack for my physique, and it has been a struggle to love my body, but now curves are in and I'm happier in myself," she told the magazine. She explained that when she was younger, she wasn’t always so confident and revealed how difficult it was for her not to compare herself to others.
"When I was younger, it was hard seeing all these thin athletes when I had more muscular curves and was big-busted," she said. "Just try running with DDs that are bouncing seven inches up and down! It's distracting, not to mention dangerous, because you can tear ligaments."
Whether by Internet trolls or even folks within her own industry, Williams’s muscular physique is under constant scrutiny. And let’s not forget that Sports Illustrated recently compared her to a horse. Yet she’s maintained her composure to keep #winning like champ she is and continues to preach the virtue of loving herself first. Basically, just a few more reasons why we love her.
