Kendrick Lamar Speaks on His 14 Hip Hop Award Nods
The good kid has swept the 2013 Hip Hop Award nominations. Compton's own, Kendrick Lamar takes the lead for the most nods with an outstanding 14 (including two in the Best Hip Hop Video category), and he's feeling like, "I'm blessed, homie."
Speaking to Bow Wow on 106 & Park, yesterday, Lamar explained. "God is good, homie. It's a privilege to be a part of it [the HHA], you know. For the most part, BET always acknowledged my talent and I always hold that as an honor."
The Music Matters artist has had a steady build of success. His indie debut, 2011's Section .80, received critical acclaim, and the next year he was picked up by Aftermath/Interscope and dropped good kid, m.A.A.d. city. This week, the album was certified platinum.
With all these nods and a platinum plaque, however, Lamar says, "The highlight for me is really going around the world and watching these people enjoy my music. I think the hardest thing for an artist to do from jump is to get one person to listen to your music, so to come from that, come from my neighborhood listening, to come from my city listening, to my state and LA listening, and going around the world, that's a beautiful thing."
In addition to the two nods for Best Hip Hop Video (for his "B---- Don't Kill My Vibe" and his part in "Problems") Lamar was also nominated twice in the People's Champ Award presented by Verizon, and in the Reese's Perfect Combo category. He's also up for the Best Live Performer, Lyricist of the Year; MVP of the Year, Made You Look Award, and Best Club-Banger, among others. He's up against Jay Z, Nas, J. Cole (who got 10 total nominations) and Wale for Album of the Year.
