Jerrod Carmichael Reacts To Dave Chapelle’s Comedic Style When It Comes To The LGBTQ Community
Comedian Jerrod Carmichael does not agree with some of the comedic material that fellow comedian Dave Chapelle has used in his recent stand-ups and has taken a moment to respond.
In an interview with GQ Hype, Carmichael addressed some of the most recent controversies surrounding Chappelle and the heavy criticism of his transphobic comments and how it will be apat of the iconic comedians legacy in the industry.
“Chappelle, do you know what comes up when you Google your name, bro? That’s the legacy? Your legacy is a bunch of opinions on trans sh*t? It’s an odd hill to die on,” he said.
Chappelle made headlines in fall 2021 after he was accused of homophobia and transhopia following his Netflix special The Closer.
The 48-year-old comedy legend has been called out for repeatedly targeting the LGBTQ community with his material. The National Black Justice Coalition asked for the content to be pulled, which Netflix has refused. Several activists have said his comedy is harmful.
In May 2022, Chappelle was attacked by 23-year-old Isaiah Lee during his stand-up set at the Netflix Is A Joke show and following Lee’s arrest, he shared that a few punch lines made by the comedian didn’t sit well with him.
“I identify as bisexual… and I wanted him to know what he said was triggering,” Lee revealed. “I wanted him to know that next time, he should consider first running his material by people it could affect.”
Dave Chappelle has not yet responded to Jerrod Carmichael’s comments.
