Celebrity Stylist Jason Bolden Says Apple Music Commercial Was the 'Ultimate Party’

Bolden talks working with Taraji, Kerry and Mary J. exclusively with B* Real.

We’re gonna put it out there: 2015 is the year of the #girlsquad. But nothing comes close to the epic-ness of the now-viral new commercial from Apple Music that debuted in September. In the Ava DuVernay-directed clip, Taraji P. Henson and Kerry Washington bring us along to their private dance party at Mary J. Bliges house. The three icons proceed to giggle and dance as they rock out to classics by Slick Rick, Phil Collins and the Notorious B.I.G. The second clip of the trilogy dropped on Thursday and depicts the three beauties grooving to salsa music in the kitchen.

One thing we can’t fail to mention is how chic each woman looked for the occasion! B*Real caught up with A-List stylist Jason Bolden (his clients include Henson, Blige, Gabrielle Union and Tika Sumpter to name a few), who dressed all three women for the commercial shoot, to get the rundown on what it was really like on set with Hollywood’s most in-demand talent.

B*Real: All three ladies have very distinct style in this commercial. What was your process for shopping the looks for Taraji, Kerry and Mary J.?

It was actually pretty easy to shop for this commercial because it was quintessential who they are. And, you know, being really, really close friends with Taraji and Mary J. Blige, it made it so easy. I literally would just shop as if I saw some really amazing, hot thing that I know they would want in their closet and what they would want to wear over to their girlfriend’s house when they wanted to be casual and just listen to great music.

How would you describe their different personal styles?
I think with Kerry, her thing is really smart. I think Taraji is, like, classic-edge. And I think Mary is more like sophisticated-rock.

What was it like working with Ava DuVernay, who directed the commercial?

She is one of the nicest people in the world. You know, Taraji and Mary will probably kill me, but I think I was more excited to work with her! She was amazing. Just to watch someone like that in action, it was pure magic.

What do you think about the commercial's huge success?
I was on pins and needles because I saw it happening, and I saw how they were honestly having so much fun. We were all covering our mouths [on set] because we were laughing so hard with them. So I was just so excited and hoping that everyone got to laugh and literally get up off their sofas and seats and just start dancing like we were as it was being captured on film that day.

The commercial seems like the ultimate girls’ afternoon. What was it like hanging out with them on set?

It was fun — it was like a party! And great food. Literally, what you guys are seeing on the commercial, is exactly what was happening that day. Whatever the vibe that you see — that energy, the dancing — that’s exactly how it was.

So what’s next for you?

I’m about to launch a product line, so I want you guys to watch out for that. It will be here in about a month or so. I can’t [reveal any more details], but it’s going to be launching really soon and a lot of my clients are going to be playing a big part in it.
