Better late than never, right?

Ryan Lochte took to his Instagram account Friday morning to issue an apology over his Rio Olympics gun-point robbery story, which Brazilian police say was a complete lie with footage to back up their claim that the USA swimmers destroyed a Rio gas station and were warned by armed security to pay for the damages.

Although the USA swimmer clearly says the word "sorry" in his lengthy post, he doesn't address the story possibly being made up and instead apologizes for not being more careful and candid in Rio.

Hmm ... accepting this apology or nah?

Lochte's statement came hours removed from the United States Olympic Committee offering an apology of its own for the four USA swimmers' behavior early Sunday morning.

This whole saga began early Sunday morning in Rio, when Lochte claimed that he and his three USA swimming teammates — Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and James Feigen — were robbed at gunpoint, with Ryan specifically alleging that he had a cocked gun placed to his forehead.

That escalated to Conger and Bentz being removed from their flight at a Rio airport and detained Wednesday night for further questioning about the alleged robbery incident. Feigen was detained before being scheduled on the same flight and was also communicating with local authorities. Lochte, too, was ordered to stay behind in Brazil, but had left the country and returned to the U.S. before getting that official word.

That same Wednesday night, Lochte tweaked the details of his story, but vehemently denied that it was fabricated.

"They had gone to the bathroom in a gas station," NBC's Matt Lauer said after speaking with Lochte, as reported by USA Today. "They got back to the taxi, and when they told the taxi driver to go, he didn't move. They said, 'Let's go,' again, we've got to get out of here,' and again the taxi driver didn't move. And that's when he says two men approached the car with guns and badges."

Lochte also changed his original account about the robbers putting a gun to his forehead.

"That's not exactly what happened," Lochte said, via Lauer's reporting, adding that the gun was pointed in his direction, instead.

After questioning, as of Thursday evening, Conger and Bentz were allowed to leave Rio and had arrived back in Miami on Friday morning, USA Today is reporting. Feigen is still awaiting clearance to return to the U.S., but has agreed to make an $11,000 donation to a Brazilian charity in the meantime.

Brazilian police have denied that a robbery ever took place, telling CNN instead that at least one of the swimmers vandalized and urinated on the Rio gas station early Sunday morning and armed security had to stop them.

Arguably supporting Brazilian police's claim was this footage of the swimmers at the gas station, which surfaced Thursday.
