There were plenty of scares but no surprises at the box office this weekend. Paranormal Activity 4 took the crown as the top-grossing film with $30.2 million in ticket sales and plans for the fifth installment of the popular found footage franchise are already underway.
Ben Affleck's Oscar shoo-in Argo came in second with $16.6 million and continues to ride the wave of fantastic critical reception and great word-of-mouth. It was followed by Hotel Transylvania and Taken 2, which officially crossed the $100 million mark in domestic ticket sales.
Alex Cross, the detective thriller starring Tyler Perry as we've never seen him before, rounded out the top five with $11.8 million. It was a disappointing, but not dismal take for the widely-publicized film and hasn't slowed chatter of a sequel.
On the art house circuit, Ava DuVernay's Middle of Nowhere continues to thrive, expanding to fourteen cities and grossing a healthy $7,000 per screen in some cities.
Next week, Halle Berry's epic time traveling thriller Cloud Atlas, in which she plays an Asian man among other bizarre characters, competes with Halloween-ready Silent Hill.
