Lee Daniels Recalls the Sad Reason He Tried to Contract HIV/AIDS
Lee Daniels has been vocal in the past about his struggles throughout his childhood and young adult years in regards to his sexuality, and, recently, he made a revelation about a moment that almost changed his life for good.
According to theJasmineBRAND.com, the famed director and producer opened up about how he once tried to commit suicide by purposefully contracting AIDS through unprotected sex with strangers while under the influence of drugs.
He also spoke on how the disease affected his life without him being a victim firsthand.
"It [AIDS] wiped away all of my friends. I had no friends," he said. "It was terrifying, because we never knew whether you could drink from glasses or what it was. It was the most terrifying thing ever, and I didn't understand why it was that I wasn't [dead], because there were far better souls than me that were going [dying]."
Explaining that his depression caused him to feel undeserving of life, he added, "I thought that I needed to go. And so I descended into drugs and into sexual bathhouses to die."
He credits God for him not being infected with AIDS today. "That I don't have AIDS is a miracle from God," he said. "I really don't understand it, because I should have had HIV. Everybody else did."
