Music’s Youngest Talent Enlivens the Coca-Cola Music Studio
Gearing up for Sunday’s (June 25) monumental night of awards, tne BET Experience brought the big, the bold and the brilliant for an exhilarating, event-packed tee off to the 2017 annual ceremony.
And as they made their BETX debuts on the stage of the Coca-Cola Music Studio, music’s budding and youthful artists raised the bar for next generation talent as well.
The trio Taylor Girlz broke the ice with an energetic playlist of their best hits, including the viral social media phenomenon “Steal Her Man.” Fittingly matching the three-woman makeup of the group, Daysha, Tiny and Ti pulled out their triple threat R&B, dance and rap talents during the performance that kept the young audience glued to the front of the stage. Each of the girls dominates her own confidence and style, making the three stand out uniquely as individuals and as a potent triple threat when joined together. And with more energy-infused performances, such as the one from the Coca-Cola Music Studio stage, Taylor Girlz told BET.com that anything could happen, joking that they “may just sneak [onto BET’s main stage] and be on this year!”
The triad of follow-up performers arriving to the stage next further proved that good things may come in twos, but incredible things come in threes. Consisting of Lola, Tashi and Diany, R&B’s dancing songstresses Billion Dollar Baby took over to continue the turn-up. Powerfully coordinating dance, pop and R&B, the triad mixed their own moves with Big Sean’s hit “Moves” and Kendrick Lamar’s “HUMBLE.” As to whether they’re ready to take on the big leagues at the BET Awards main stage, however, the ladies say plan to climb their talents up the ranks.
“We have a lot of work,” they told BET.com. “We hope to be there as soon as possible, but we have to put in that work.”
Introduced first by way of Billion Dollar Baby, “Juju on That Beat” dance sensation Zay Hilfigerr made especially certain to keep up the momentum. Zay danced his way out of breath, showing fans that despite being only 16 years old, he’s able to give his all for the energy it takes to pull off a BET Experience performance.
DJ Mal-Ski showed up for soundboard duties to keep the young fans jamming out to their favorite hits right from the audience as well. But with only three acts left, fans were graced with performances from R&B’s newcomer songstress Zonnique as she took the crowd’s energy to exciting new levels. Dressed in a jean jumpsuit and red bandanna, the 21-year-old showed how well she can stand without a cosign from her music icon parents. Closing out her set, Zonnique told BET.com that her favorite part wasn’t just about her energy, but the energy she received from such young fans.
“I love my young fans, so I was glad they were out here because they’re never afraid to show out and dance and just have fun,” she said. Discussing whether she saw herself among a much larger and seasoned crowd for BET Awards, she added that she would love to make a 2018 appearance, but understands the work to be put in for it, too.
“You know you really have to be on you're A-game [for that],” she said. “I’m going to give it two years just to be safe.”
As if the danceoff wasn’t enough for a Coca-Cola Music Studio finale, World of Dance and the three male heartthrobs of The Bomb Digz topped off the young crowd’s evening as well. Both performances kept fans on their toes and indefinitely declared a future artist generation for the taking.
