Lil Mama Posted This Photo For Jay-Z's Birthday, And Fans Were Livid

She eventually cleared the air.

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will forever go down as one of the most shock-worthy of its kind in awards show history thanks to one of its notorious stage crashers, Lil Mama, who RSVP’d an unwelcomed spot for herself on stage with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys during their performance.

Nearly a decade later, and the Brooklyn femcee is able to laugh about it, even if the rest of Hov’s global fan base isn’t laughing with her.

In her personal birthday message for Jay, Lil Mama posted a photo of herself from the 2009 blunder posing next to him at the close of the performance, a picture that has become a symbolic laughingstock in memory of the incident.

“IM STILL STANDING WIT YOU…,” she captioned the picture. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY HOV #BROOKLYN.”

But there’s still those determined never to let her live down the moment as the comments section quickly filled with disgruntled fans who reminded her of Jay’s disappointment with her impromptu stage appearance. Hov had later shared with Angie Martinez that her actions, along with Kanye West’s stage takeover during Taylor Swift’s Best Female Video Award acceptance speech in the name of Beyoncé, was “outta line.”

Lil Mama then felt it her duty to let his discontented fans know that the post was a simple testament to her evolution instead of the cold shoulder to Hov’s that some interpreted the message as.

“My last post was Intended to acknowledge growth,” she wrote in a new post of a solo Jay. “That night, two of my hometown Heros felt disrespected and in return I felt neglected. However, time heals all and give us the gift of hindsight (20/20 vision) where we can see things clearer, learn and grow from them. ven having to overcome the scrutiny that came with my choices, I still find it in my heart to forgive and LOVE in Hopes That it is returned upon me.”

Such scrutiny led to an egregiously dark aftermath for her as well, which she revealed to Complex in 2015. In addition to being blackballed in certain parts of the industry, Lil Mama said that it took just about everything in her to overcome the controversy.

“It took a lot of mental strength, spiritual strength, and physical strength, not to want to hurt others, not to want to hurt myself,” she said in the 2015 interview. “A person could be damn near suicidal."

Now she says in her recent Instagram post, she’s learned the virtue of forgiveness and progression, especially after reading Jay’s latest New York Times interview. As he demonstrated in 4:44, Lil Mama says she, too, is “inspired by [his] honesty, vulnerability and maturity.”

“I’m ready for dialogue,” she concluded. “Love You Jay... Happy Birthday.”

We’re sure Jay would receive such transparency with open arms.
