Disgusting Picture Of White Student Holding 'Put The Panic Back In Hispanic' Sign During Pep Rally
A high school in Robertsdale, Alabama, has come under fire after students were pictured holding a sign offensive to Hispanics at a football pep rally.
The caption of the photo, which was first posted on Instagram, read, "Put the Panic back in Hispanic. #dontgetbutthurt I'm honestly not gunna care if you do anyways so #sorryboutit"
The sign was displayed during the rally for the Robertsdale Bears football team before they played the Spanish Fort Toros Friday (Sept. 15).
Student Jennifer Lopez Vasquez shared the photo to her Facebook because she found it extremely disrespectful, especially considering it was Hispanic Heritage Month.
"I don't see a point in why they did that because there not really that many Hispanic people in my school and they knew it was, like, Hispanic month,” Vasquez told Local 15 TV.
On her Facebook post, Vasquez wrote, "That's very disrespectful in so my ways. But it's funny to think that our school thinks it ‘ OKAY ‘ this is Honestly what white trash looks like."
Domingo Soto, A lawyer representing one of the girls captured in the photo, says the point was not to insult classmates.
"This is a kind of sophomoric joke that's kind of just gotten out of control."
Soto explains that his client was trying to poke fun at the opposing football team, Spanish Fort.
The student wrote an apology note, saying:
It wasn't my intention and was not meant for it to be taken that way. I apologize for the publicity and misunderstandings that it has brought to our school.
The Baldwin County School Board responded to the matter by saying it was unacceptable language and that they will be following up on the matter.
