Kendrick Lamar Explains Relationship With Lady Gaga

K-Dot insists the pop superstar is just a friend.

Is Lady Gaga going gaga for Kendrick Lamar? That’s the question on everyone’s lips after Gaga appeared at the side of the stage during his performance at the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago over the weekend. With everyone abuzz about the odd couple, Kendrick took to the Windy City airwaves on Monday (July 16) to set the record straight.

“That’s a good friend,” Kendrick told WGCI FM's “Morning Riot” crew, denying that the two had a, well, bad romance. “She good people, man.”

The Compton rapper — who’s making noise with “The Recipe,” the Dr. Dre-featuring lead single from his forthcoming Aftermath debut good kid, m.A.A.d. city — was first connected to Gaga after the two exchanged some complimentary tweets earlier this month. "@kendricklamar What a sweetie calling me this morning to see how I'm doin,” Gaga wrote. “See you soon. Love from across the pond.” She later told a fan, “He and his lyrics are the s--t."

K-Dot said it was Twitter that connected the two in the first place. “She just reached over on Twitter, being a fan of the music,” he told WCGI host Tony Sculfield. “We come from two different worlds as far as the music we're doing. She’s a fan of hip hop and she says…that my sound is refreshing. That’s what really attracted her to it.”

Kendrick also admitted that he was shocked when the pop superstar reached out to him — so much so that he assumed the message was from an imposter. “There be so many fake accounts on Twitter and stuff so I had to go through and really check,” he said.
