Box Office: Rock of Ages Fizzles, Madagascar 3 Rules
Audiences were clearly not in a head-banging mood this weekend.
Highly anticipated musical Rock of Ages, which boasts an all-star cast including Tom Cruise and Mary J. Blige, tanked in spite of major pre-release hype, bringing in only $15.1 million for third place.
Adam Sandler fared even worse with his R-rated comedy That's My Boy, which pulled in a dismal $13 million and earning the distinction of being the actor's worst opening in eight years.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, the DreamWorks animated family film featuring the voices of Chris Rock, Ben Stiller and Jada Pinkett-Smith, easily kept it's No. 1 spot for the second weekend in a row, scoring $35.5 million in ticket sales this weekend.
Idris Elba and Charlize Theron's sci-fi drama Prometheus held on to second place with $20.2 million, though it wasn't all good news for the effects-heavy film, which dropped a steep 70 percent in ticket sales.
Next week, Madagascar will have to defend it's title against newcomers Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, starring Anthony Mackie, and Pixar's Brave.
