Here's What Usher Wants Protesters to Take Away from 'Hands of Stone'

The actor gave a thorough response.

Usher is gearing up to star as the legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard in the upcoming film Hands of Stone, and while the film follows the journey of the icon, it also tackles some pivotal social issues.

When asked what he hopes this film will instill in the young generation of protestors, Usher gave a thorough response, citing directly what the film can contribute to that narrative.

"We're in a time of indifference, and obviously, for the civil issues that we have here in America," he said. "I think that is definitely going to let you know the history of where we've come from and how we've either evolved or not."

Ultimately, he hopes the film will inspire people to think for themselves and to look beyond what they already know, and show them how two separate groups worked together.

"One's perspective is your own," he said. "I think, if anything, it will obviously show America [that] Black lives, white lives, blue lives, every life, that there's been this contract from America and Panama. How did they work through their differences? What happened? What is the issue? What is the story of the pride of Panama and what the issue was with regards to the canal? I think it touches on that aspect of it."

Hands of Stone hits theaters on August 26.
