A private autopsy report 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott revealed that Charlotte-Mecklenberg police shot the Charlotte resident in the back. In total, Scott suffered four gunshot wounds — one in the back, one in the abdomen, and an entry and exit wound in his left hand.

The report was released by Scott’s family and their attorneys after commissioning a private autopsy to be performed. They’ve publicly released the report to keep this case as transparent as possible.

Based on the results of the autopsy report and the existing video evidence, the Scott family attorneys believe that he was first shot in the back. Attorneys also believe that this back shot was the one that killed Scott, reports ABC News.

When Scott’s body was first turned over to officials, it was autopsied by a Charlotte medical examiner; however, Scott’s family had a very difficult time getting any information from the report.

Charles Monnett, one of the attorneys representing the Scott family, said the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office in Charlotte "refused to release even the most basic information."

According to Monnett, Scott’s family was essentially “forced” to request a private autopsy in order to gain any new information.

Scott was shot on September 20 when CMPD officers believed they saw him with a weapon while waiting in his car in his apartment complex parking lot.

Although police maintained the notion that Scott was armed, his family and members of the community denied their claim and suggested that he held a book instead. As a result, massive protests — at times violent — erupted in Charlotte.
