This CNN Anchor Is Being Slammed for Her Racist Remark to a Young Spelling Bee Champion

"Its root is not in Sanskrit, which is what you're probably used to using."

Ananya Vinay was recently crowned the 2017 Scripps Spelling Bee champion and part of the 12-year-old's victory tour had her being interviewed by CNN.

Vinay, who is of Indian origin and born and raised in Fresno, California, played along with CNN hosts Alisyn Camerota and Chris Cuomo jokingly asking her to spell "covfefe," referring to Donald Trump's tweet.

But things took a sharp turn when Camerota said, "It is a nonsense word, but we're not sure that its root is in Sanskrit, which is probably what you're used to..."

Wait...what?

So, Camerota just assumed that Vinay is used to Sanskrit, which is not a widely-used language. Well, Twitter took it upon itself to blast her for her racist remark and overall ignorant assumption. It's a shame that Camerota had to taint this brilliant young lady's moment.

  • Oh, the ignorance of this comment

    Shaking our damn heads.

  • And Twitter didn't stay silent

    Talk to 'em.

  • Really, though?

    Do better, CNN.

Well, CNN,what's it going to be?

  • Others wanted to say...

    Clapback.

  • By The Way, can someone tell Alisyn that Ananya is from Fresno, Cali?

Show some respect to the Spelling Bee champ!

  • Ananya is too good for this

    Hold this L, Mrs. Camerota.
