Sanaa Lathan on Being an Actress: "It Has Its Challenges"

The Repentance star talks her new film and more.

Sanaa Lathan has been a Hollywood survivor for nearly twenty years. With her straight-talk attitude and girl-next-door beauty, she is a staple in romantic comedies, including classics like Love & Basketball and The Best Man. Now, the actress takes a darker turn in the thriller Repentance, also starring Anthony Mackie and Forest Whitaker.
Lathan got to practice her best high-pitched scream as the wife of a life coach (Mackie) who, along with her husband, falls victim to one of his deranged patients. "You don't see a lot of psychological thrillers with all-Black casts," she points out, adding that she's not personally a big fan of scary movies, but Repentance's gripping story got her to sign on for the challenging part.
Speaking of challenges, Lathan opens up to us about the perseverance it took to make a successful career in Hollywood over the past eighteen years. "As good as it looks from the outside, it definitely has its challenges," she confesses. "Any profession does, but acting has its own set of challenges."
Check out our exclusive interview with Sanaa Lathan below and see Repentance in theaters on February 28.
