Student Arrested, No Injuries Reported After Shots Fired at South Carolina State University
Several shots were fired in an academic building on the campus of South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, S.C., sending the school into lockdown for almost an hour on Tuesday (Feb. 6), the Associated Press reports.
According to a statement from the university, Orangeburg law enforcement officials “immediately subdued the suspected shooter in a foot chase,” and then arrested Rolando J. Ifill, a 19-year-old sophomore from Charleston on suspicion of carrying a firearm on school property. No one was hurt during the incident.
Claflin University president Dwaun J. Warmack told WACH that the school, which sits adjacent to SC State, was also on lockdown after a student from that school “ran into a dining hall there in search of safety.”
Claflin’s emergency alert system informed students that shots were fired and a the suspect was wearing all black with a ski mask
In a statement, Warmack shared details about the shooting and the response of his university.
“Earlier today, a shooting incident occurred on the campus of South Carolina State University. Following this unfortunate event, a South Carolina State student, while seeking safety, ran into our dining hall. The student suffered minor injuries from broken glass but is now safe and receiving care. This incident caused understandable panic and distress among our community members. In response to this incident, we took immediate and proactive steps to ensure the safety and security of all individuals on campus,” his statement read.
SC State student Montez Wiggins said why he thinks students have guns on campus.
“A part of me feels like some of these students don’t feel safe, that’s why they carry guns here, but you know, I just don’t feel like it’s the answer,” Wiggins told WLTX.
Meanwhile, more charges are pending against Ifill.
The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division is assisting SC State in the investigation.
