Upon Kanye West’s 2018 return to social media, the Chicago emcee brought his signature socio-political controversy with him after tweeting his support for Candace Owens, a Black conservative commentator who champions Donald Trump as the leader and savior of the free world.

But his tweets not only ignited outrage and a war over in political Twitter, but a lengthy conversation with Hot 97’s Ebro Darden where Kanye expressed, but failed to explain, his love for the White House occupant.

Ebro explained that the conversation came about from a photo of Beyoncé that he posted with some subtle shade at the West-Kardashian family.

“Now we know why they don’t do playdates,” Ebro captioned the photo of a flawless Queen Bey at Coachella. The comment echoes Yeezy’s 2016 gripe with the Carter family after revealing that the first-born heiress, Blue Ivy, and his daughter North West, who are close in age, have never even had a play date together.

An unnamed friend of ‘Ye’s picked up the shade and jumped to his defense at Ebro, an exchange that was happening at the same time that Kanye was tweeting his support for Owens. Eventually, the outspoken Kanye hopped into a conversation with Ebro, asserting that, “we just don’t want to be out here acting like n**gas!” the Hot 97 host said. In the 30-minute long conversation, Ebro said he tried explaining to Kanye how damaging him and Owens’ problematic statements actually were.

“Kanye, the conversations been open, bro!” he said after ‘Ye’s plea for open dialogue. “You’re just not a part of it. And you’re just chiming in right now because you got an album coming out!”

Not to mention, Ebro added, making loose, controversial statements without finishing a thought doesn’t accomplish that goal, and using those insights as promo for his album isn’t the way to go about it either. The conversation seems to have gotten a little more intense as well after Ebro told him that he was “cooning for cash” and Kanye argued that he was trying to “de-program” the masses from conventional thinking—the Black community, presumably. He’s also trying to “lead with love,” ‘Ye added, a claim that Ebro called BS on after expressing that this can’t be the case since Kanye aligns himself with folks who don’t live by that merit.

It seems Ebro was pretty much done with the exchange after Kanye’s most appalling statement, though: “I love Donald Trump.”

From there, the radio host allowed callers to weigh in on their thoughts for Kanye’s latest controversy, and of course, they had a mouthful for the GOOD Music leader.
