Box Office: A Good Weekend for Taken 2 , Middle of Nowhere
Nothing could take down Taken 2 at the box office this weekend. The action thriller, starring Liam Neeson, beat all new entries, including Ben Affleck's Oscar-buzzy Argo and Kevin James' family comedy Here Comes the Boom.
But there was still good news for the films that didn't place first. Argo came in second, yet still wildly over-performed with a $20.1 million take and glowing reviews that should carry it straight to the Oscars.
Meanwhile, Ava DuVernay's sophomore effort, Middle of Nowhere, was the top-grossing specialty film of the weekend, grossing about a quarter of a million dollars in just six theaters. The film is expected to expand to more cities in the coming weeks based on its strong opening weekend performance.
Hotel Transylvania, the animated film voiced by Cee Lo Green and Selena Gomez, hung on to the top five with another $17.3 million in ticket sales, bringing its domestic total to just past the $100 million mark.
Next week, Paranormal Activity 4 and Alex Cross, for which Tyler Perry trades his Madea wig for a badge, will attempt to oust Taken 2 from its perch.
