Lizzo, T.I., Diddy, And Other Big Name Stars Weigh In On 2020 Presidential Election
Today is Election Day. Citizens from all across the United States are lining up to cast their ballots to decide who will be the president for the next four years. Among those who are also waiting for hours at their local polling place are artists like Cardi B, 2 Chainz, and Snoop Dogg.
They are not the only influential figures exercising their rights to vote.
Several other celebrities have taken to social media to show they cast their ballots while reminding people to vote over the past few weeks. Yesterday (Nov. 2), Beyoncé endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his vice presidential running mate Kamala Harris while encouraging her fellow Texans to “come thru” in the battleground state.
As the 2020 presidential election comes to its conclusion, people are anxious to see if their candidate pulls out the win. These same musicians and hip hop luminaries, that seem bigger than life, are just like any other American in the country locked into reports as the results ever-so-slowly pour in. At the same time, they are using their platforms on Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram to remind people that their votes have power and that there will be a new day...if we use that power.
Lizzo took to Instagram where she shared a stirring message on the current state of the nation and her hopes for the future.
“I believe in so much, and if I believe it one day I can see it,” she began. “When I think of this country I don’t think of its laws I think of its people. I think about how we were raised to be patriotic of violence, propaganda & war. I think about how this country is owned by the oppressor and how the oppressed are locked in a valley of capitalism.”
She went on to acknowledge those who have fought to make a difference, both past and present.
“But I also think of the young people who refuse to be spoon-fed mistruths. I think of the elders who bucked against hateful prejudices even when it felt impossible ... Because of you, I’m still hopeful,” she wrote. “I believe in a country that teaches the true history so we can better understand where we live and how we can do better.”
The “Truth Hurts” singer then seemingly referenced the countless Black lives that have been at the hands of police brutality and the historical treatment of Native Americans in the country.
“I believe in a country that listens to the cries of the protester and doesn’t politicize death,” the message continued. “I believe in [the] restoration of this beautiful land and respecting the communities of people who owned America before colonizers renamed it.”
She added, “I believe in fairness, equality, a complete removal of religion in places where it does not belong. Let religion live in the churches and places of worship... the quiet prayer rooms, the joyful congregations.. and out of Congress.”
Lizzo concluded her message, writing, “I believe in so much, and if I believe it one day I can see it. It may not be tomorrow it may not be today, but it will be one day if we stay activated. We the people, ALL the people, deserve it. Today’s the last day to vote. Stay in line, stay determined, and thank YOU for voting.”
Bun B also took to Instagram where he reminded everyone that the work doesn’t end after the election is over. The Houston rap legend shared a message that read, “It is essential that everyone who votes exercise that right tonight. But make no mistake about it. Regardless of who wins, the real work continues.”
The note continued, “Whoever is president needs to know that the fight to liberate people of color from their oppression continues on. We won’t stop.”
