Cardi B Wins Again After California Jury Ruled She Didn't Appropriate Mixtape Artwork
Cardi B scored another legal victory in her latest court battle.
On October 20 (Friday), a federal jury ruled in favor of the "Hot Sh*t" emcee after she was reportedly sued for stealing his likeness for the art on her latest mixtape. Although his work inspired the art, the jury didn't believe that she stole Kevin Michael Brophy's art, the Associated Press reported.
Cardi finally appeared in court in Santa Ana after Brophy accused her of jacking his tattoo of a tiger, snake and roses in 2017. The artwork was photoshopped on a model's back who was displayed on Cardi's "Gangsta B*tch Music, Volume 1" mixtape.
Brophy testified that the rapper's alleged use of his artwork– damaged his image and reputation.
"This was my Michelangelo. People would come up to me: 'I can't believe you own that piece. Can I see it?' When you get one little tattoo, that's one thing. This was a journey. It took a lot of pride. I want to protect this as much as I can. It just felt devalued. It felt like my Michelangelo was stolen off the wall."
Cardi rebutted his claim saying, "He hasn't gotten fired. He hasn't gotten divorced. How has he suffered? Please, tell me how he has suffered?"
If the ruling had gone in favor of Brophy, he could've gotten $5 million.
The Bronx rapper celebrated her victory on Twitter.
"I just won this lawsuit …I'm soo emotional right now …I wanna kiss God's feet right now …..IM BEYOND GRATEFUL," she wrote on Twitter.
