Naturi Naughton Says She Is Releasing A New Album That Will Address 'Tumultuous’ Fallout With 3LW

“I think in that group things just didn't go right.”

Power star Naturi Naughton revealed that she will be releasing a new album. Not only that but the actress and singer shared some of the songs on forthcoming project will delve in her ‘tumultuous’ ouster from 3LW.

  • Speaking with PEOPLE, Naughton said, “I want to bring back that '90s era vibe with people really singing. I'm excited to just tell my story through song because a lot of the songs I do talk about feelings I had after being ousted from 3LW.”

Naugton said the fallout with her former group mates was like a “tumultuous breakup,” describing her experience as part of the trio as “exciting, but also a little scary.”

“However, I do look back and remember, 'Oh, I was on the TRL tour, opening up for Destiny's Child,” Naughton reminisced.

Composed of Naughton, Adrienne Bailon, and Kiely Williams, 3LW rose to prominence in the early 2000s. But just as their star was rising with the hit song “No More (Baby I’ma Do Right),” rumors of discord and infighting within the group arose, including accusations of a KFC chicken fight that pushed Naughton to exit the group in 2002.

Before her departure, 3LW released two albums, 3LW and A Girl Can Mack. Bailon and Williams would eventually go on to join the Cheetah Girls before both groups disbanded in the mid-2000s.

  • Despite the rough patch, Naughton went on to carve out a lane for herself in acting before securing the role of Tasha St. Patrick in the popular gangster drama series.

"I think a lot of people that know me now, who even watch Power, don't realize how long my journey has been,” Naughton told PEOPLE. “This has been since I was 15 and I've been in the business for 20 years. I look back at that experience of being in a girl group, although it had some learning experiences that were growing pains, it just showed me what it takes to make it in this industry…Trust is a huge part of it and I think in that group things just didn't go right.”

  • Speaking of her album, Naughton said it be “R&B fused with a little bit of that hip hop swag but done in a way where we can turn up and still hear real music.”

  • This comes after an Instagram Live session back in March wherein Williams said her piece on some of the behind-the-scenes drama that led to her falling out with her 3LW group mates. While Bailon and Naughton made amends with each other in 2017, Williams has remained at odds with both of the women.

“I don’t feel like I have anything to make amends for, especially as it relates to Adrienne,” she aired out during the live session. “As far as Naturi goes, if there was ever a reason to apologize, all of that has kind of been overshadowed by the literal lies and really ugly stuff that she said about my mom and my sister. So, no. Not interested in that. I’m sorry.”
