Update: 

On Monday, the trial against the North Carolina cop who shot and killed Walter Scott ended in a mistrial, reported the New York Times. 

The 12 jurors, 11 of which were white, reviewing the trial were unable to reach a unanimous decision as to whether or not Michael Slager, 35, was guilty of manslaughter. 

In 2015, Slager was recorded on video shooting Scott in the back as he ran away from an arrest. Scott's shooting ignited much protest and it is expected that this mistrial will result in more demonstrations. 

Now, prosecutors will have to decide if they would like to retry the case.

Justice for Walter Scott may be a long shot now as the jury remains deadlocked in the trial over the fate of the cop who killed him.

One of the jurors says they couldn’t deliver a guilty verdict because to them, there’s too much uncertainty surrounding the shooting.

“I still cannot without a reasonable doubt convict the defendant,” the juror wrote, in a letter delivered to Judge Newman. “I cannot and will not change my mind.”

Michael Slager, the police officer accused of killing Scott, and his defense team were prompted by the juror’s admission to request that the judge rule the case a mistrial. The judge though would instead allot more time and encourage the jury to come up with a verdict.

If convicted, Slager faces 30 years to life in prison. A voluntary manslaughter conviction could also be reached if the more serious charge isn’t agreed upon.

Video of Walter Scott being killed by Slager was released shortly after the incident. Scott is seen fleeing from Slager, who decided not to chase after him but rather raise his gun and fire five shots into Scott’s back.

The jury’s deadlock announcement has many on social media upset. So many can’t understand why no conviction has been reached when the video seems pretty clear.
