Recently, Eric Benét has been getting slammed by hip-hop when he asserted that “rappers are the faces of white supremacy.” Well, now he’s throwing jabs at his own genre, claiming that R&B is white-washed.

During an interview with Van Lathan, the R&B crooner mentioned that he’s excited about the current state of his genre. “I’m hearing a minority of artists who are embracing musicianship. Like what me, India Arie and Musiq Soulchild were doing in the '90s, paying homage to those from the '60s and '70s. They’re doing it now.

They’re paying homage to us.” However, when asked whether or not “R&B [was] dying,” he said it’s not celebrated anymore. “When I think of R&B, I think of rhythm and blues. It’s having beautiful imperfections. it’s the passion and imperfections that make it something.” He said while it isn’t dying, it’s more embraced when it isn’t coming from Black people, going on to say that a few “new cats” he refused to namedrop aren’t receiving that Adele/Sam Smith level of recognition and attention.
