Kevin Durant Is Out Indefinitely

NBA star's return up in the air after soreness in right foot.

Tough news for Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The team's general manager, Sam Presti, announced Friday that Durant is "out indefinitely" after experiencing continued soreness in his twice-operated-on right foot. This news comes after the Thunder held Durant out of practice Thursday. Durant, the NBA's reigning MVP, will continue conditioning but will be removed from all basketball activity, according to The Oklahoman. Whether KD will return before the regular season ends or during the playoffs is currently unknown.

After having surgery to repair the Jones fracture in his right foot, Durant missed the Thunder's first 17 games of the season. A sprained ankle forced him to miss six more games from mid to late December. Durant worked his way back, but, after having continued soreness, underwent a second procedure on his right foot last month, missing the next 14 games. If Durant is eventually ruled out for the remainder of the regular season, the Jones fracture and its subsequent complications would have cost him 45 games this season, as he has only played 27.

Durant's indefinite absence hurts the Thunder's playoff chances. They've been able to hold on to the eighth and final seed in the Western Conference, thanks largely to the sizzling play of Russell Westbrook (averaging 27.6 points, 8.4 assists, 7.2 rebounds per game).

Earlier this week, the team announced that Serge Ibaka would be out for four to six weeks following arthroscopic knee surgery.
