Cardi B Wants To See More Support For Diverse Female Artists In The Music Industry

“People need somebody to relate to or gravitate to.”

Cardi B appeared on Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio show to discuss female empowerment in the music business where she shared her hopes to see more diverse representation amongst female artists.

  • The Bronx rapper has been keeping a relatively low profile these last few months, although she’s been very present on social media (see her coronavirus meme that got turned into a remix). Anticipation for Cardi's next project is high after she took a Grammy for Best Rap Album, for her debut studio album, Invasion of Privacy, and she has been using the time to work on the highly-anticipated follow-up. Expectations for the project shot through the roof after the “Bodak Yellow” rapper revealed that she’s joined musical forces with rap’s hottest breakout star, Megan Thee Stallion, to release new single “WAP.”

  • The new single drops this Friday (August 7) and, ahead of its release, Cardi sat down with Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio show to talk about her career. She shared her hopes to see a diverse array of female artists that everyone can relate to and feel inspired by.

“I feel like there should be different female artists that everybody can relate to. Somebody might relate to me, or my past — I was a dancer. I was in the streets. But then somebody could relate to another female artist that was a school girl or something,” she pointed out. “Some female artists are more tomboyish than others. And some female artists can relate to the girly type of person. And some females can relate to the pop your pussy type of female artist. So I feel like there should be variety. Because people need somebody to relate to or gravitate to. But people be trying to make that beef.”

  • Cardi B has long been an outspoken advocate for her female peers as more women are taking reign over the millennial hip-hop game. Last summer, she and numerous others called out Jermain Dupri after the So So Def mogul likened the newest generation to “strippers rapping.”

Cardi fired back at his assertion on IG, stating “There’s a lot of female rappers that be rapping they a** off.  Y'all don't be supporting them and they be mad dope.”
