12 Years a Slave Named Best Film by New York Film Critics Online
New York loves 12 Years a Slave. The organization New York Film Critics Online voted the drama, directed by Steve McQueen and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, as the best film of the year. The group also gave its best actor award to Ejiofor and its best supporting actress award to the film’s Lupita Nyong’o.
Fruitvale Station helmer Ryan Coogler was also honored with a Best Debut Director prize, while awards for direction and cinematography went to Gravity.
The Boston Society of Film Critics, voting Sunday, similarly named 12 Years a Slave the best picture of the year and also cited McQueen as best director and the film’s Chiwetel Ejiofor as best actor. The Beantown critics also bestowed Coogler with Best New Director.
The awards are racking up for the two films, among the most talked-about in years. 12 Years seems destined for Oscar nominations while many consider Fruitvale Station a dark horse contender for Hollywood's biggest night.
