BET Wins Three NAACP Image Awards
Tracee Ellis Ross and Malcolm-Jamal Warner both won outstanding actress and actor in a comedy series for their roles in BET Network’s hit show Reed Between the Lines at the NAACP Image Awards Friday night.
Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil also were honored for their writing, winning the outstanding writing in a comedy series for the "Parachutes….Beach Chairs" episode of The Game.
Reed Between the Lines and The Game had both been nominated for outstanding comedy series. Pooch Hall and Wendy Raquel Robinson were both up for outstanding actress and actor in a comedy series for their roles in The Game.
BET had been nominated for a total of 15 awards.
The Help collected three prizes, including best actress honors for Viola Davis, supporting actress prize for Octavia Spencer and outstanding motion picture.
Whitney Houston was also honored during the awards. Footage of the singer, who died Saturday in Beverly Hills, accepting the Image Award for outstanding female artist in 1994 was shown.
Samuel L. Jackson presented George Lucas with the Vanguard Award. Lucas was honored for his work, including the recent Red Tails, which tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen.
The NAACP Image Awards celebrates the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, film and literature. It also honors individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative endeavors.
The two-hour event aired live Friday on NBC.
