Fire Destroys South Carolina Church

Feds, state investigate blaze at predominantly Black house of worship in Warrenville.

As residents of South Carolina struggle to pick up the pieces after the massacre at Emanuel AME, another predominantly Black church in the state has to reconstruct.
Federal and state investigators are looking into a fire that destroyed the Glover Grove Missionary Baptist Church in the small town of Warrenville, S.C., 15 miles northeast of Augusta, Georgia, on Friday morning (June 26). Captain Eric Abdullah, public information officer for the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, said no cause has been determined.

Glover Grove is one of five Black churches to catch fire since the massacre at Emanuel AME, following ones in Knoxville, Tennessee; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Macon, Georgia. In those instances, investigators say the fires were deliberately set. Another, in Elryia, Ohio occurred early Saturday. Authorities have yet to determine if it was arson.

The violence continues as protestors and concerned citizens rally for the removal of the Confederate Flag that flies over the Charleston, S.C. state house and the victims of the Emanuel AME massacre are laid to rest.
