Two Prison Guards Resign After Photo of Beaten Inmate Goes Viral

Cortez Berry was also allegedly attacked by a group of inmates for refusing to join a prison gang.

Two correction officers at a Forsyth, Ga., prison resigned earlier this week after a photo of a beaten teenage inmate kneeling on the floor with a leash around his neck was posted on Facebook, NBC News reports.

Authorities also confirmed that two prisoners involved in the March 27 incident were reportedly transferred out of the Al Burruss Correctional Training Center.

The family of the 18-year-old victim, Cortez Berry, told NBC News that they went to the prison to investigate after the image turned up on the social media website. The guards alleged they were unaware Berry had been beaten.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, he was reportedly beaten by "at least" 10 other inmates for allegedly refusing to join a prison gang before being forced to pose for the photograph. The image was apparently captured and posted with a contraband cellphone.

"No guard was there to help him," his aunt, Shavondria Wright, told NBC News.

Berry has since been transferred to another state prison to continue serving an eight-and-a-half-year sentence for aggravated assault, robbery and theft of a motor vehicle.

"In our continued efforts for the safety of our inmates, the Department transferred the other two inmates involved to other facilities," the Department of Corrections said in a statement. "Additionally, both supervising officers involved in the incident have resigned."

The agency did not release the identity of the officers or say whether they were disciplined before resigning, NBC News reports.
