According to Merriam-Webster, cancel culture is the “practice or tendency of engaging in mass canceling as a way of expressing disapproval and exerting social pressure.”
Last summer, Lizzo was blasted for a lyric in her song “GRRRLS” that some claimed was an ableist slur.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, the 34-year-old said that she was unaware of that particular connotation and was using it “in the way that it's used in the Black community" to mean "go off, turn up.” She ultimately chose to edit the song and change the wording.
