President Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. A critically injured Lincoln was carried to the Petersen House across the street, where he died the next morning. Lincoln was the first president to be assassinated in U.S. history. The 16th president of the United States, he is most known for delivering the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, in which he declared "all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free.”
