BET Talks: Producer Buckwild Reminisces on 90's Hip Hop While Diggin' in the Crates

Buckwild reflects on what he learned from Diddy while working on the Notorious BIG's "I Gotta Story to Tell."

From digging in the crates to building a brand, Bronx legend and producer Buckwild is one of our time's most critically acclaimed creatives. The 55-year-old is an integral part of hip-hop amongst the rest of our legends and began his career as part of the supergroup Diggin' In The Crates, also featuring Lord Finesse, Diamond D, Big L, O.C., Fat Joe, Buckwild, Showbiz and A.G., DJ O.Gee and The Ghetto Dwellas.

Buckwild worked with huge talent, including Big L, JAY-Z, Faith Evans, 50 Cent, and many more.

In an interview with BET.com, the super producer expressed how "blessed" he is to be here still.

"By God's grace, the universe got me here," he said.

"He put me in the right position,  gave me all the love, and had me meet everyone I needed to in order to continue on this journey."

It's 50 years of the greatest genre to be birthed on earth, and Buckwild reflected on his career, stating hip-hop is currently in a state of "education."

"We're in a state of education, and we can teach people what should be done, how to do it, and how to put out the type of albums that need to be put out," he began.

"We can teach people how you can sell millions of records -- a lot of cats come in the game saying how they want to sell records like how I did. That's where musical integrity needs to come into play because back in the day, we would look at things and we would want to have the best records."

With so much support from his crew, Buckwild told BET.com he perfected his dj'ing skills in public school.

"This was back when they used to have dj crews and I learned a bit on my own, but it was a dude named Peewee who showed me a lot," he said.

"If you don't have a dope beat, the artist can't rap. I finished high school and my friends didn't know how I could dj. There were a ton of artists and at first, I didn't have my focus on it but I didn't know I could be a dj until I was out of school."
