Olympus Has Fallen is riding high!
The Antoine Fuqua-directed film, starring Angela Bassett, Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman, scored a $30.5 million opening weekend, coming in second place just behind family-friendly film The Croods. That film, voiced by Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds and Nicholas Cage, comes as a relief for Dreamworks Animation, which failed to find an audience with Rise of the Guardians.
Oz the Great and Powerful, which topped the box office for the last two weeks in a row, slipped to third place but still saw a strong showing from audiences and added $22 million to its purse. Buzz-worthy indie film Spring Breakers, featuring Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens as we've never seen them before, expanded nationwide to a decent, but not awe-inspiring, $5 million.
Rounding out the top five are Halle Berry's thriller The Call and Tina Fey's college comedy Admission.
Next week, Tyler Perry's Temptation, starring Jurnee Smollett, Brandy and Kim Kardashian, goes up against G.I. Joe: Retaliation for first place.
