Big Sean Unveils His New Album, ‘Detroit 2’
Big Sean's next musical era is nearly upon us.
The Detroit rapper was on a leave of sorts from the music industry to sort things out in his personal life. Signs of his return cropped in May of 2019, which was soon followed by Sean’s first solo release in two years, “Overtime” and “Single Again (ft Jhené Aiko).” In an interview with Zane Lowe of Beats 1, he opened up about his refreshed outlook on life and coming to terms with himself intrinsically. “But you know, throughout that whole time, I've been working on music. So, it is good to get it out. It is good for people to just finally see where we are because I got so much just ready for the world,” he shared. As expected, Sean’s 2019 releases were a prelude to his long-awaited followup to 2017’s I Decided.
Taking to Twitter on Wednesday (March 25), he unveiled his album and its title to his 14.6 million followers. “Welcome to Detroit 2,” he shared. “Detroit the mixtape deserves a sequel…feels right.” Along with his announcement, Sean dropped off a two-minute homage to his hometown. “Detroit, to me, is home. But I feel like it’s more than just a city, you know. It’s for real a mentality,” he says in the video’s opening. The visual also included intimate shots of Detroit and a snapshot of Sean and Atlanta trapeteer Young Thug cooking up in the studio. The G.O.O.D Music MC also hinted at what kind of sound he’s envisioned for the album.
“I been going back listening to music that impacted me growing. Songs I heard on the radio everyday but didn’t realize was only popping in Detroit,” he said. “It feels like a whole new energy in the city. It’s inspiring to watch. To the point it inspired me to go harder than ever. It’s like a phoenix rising out of the ashes.”
A release date for the album has not been announced thus far, but fans are hyped for Detroit 2 nonetheless. Some are already declaring it the best news of 2020.
“Detroit is still my favourite mixtape up to this day. This is like a dream coming true,” one fan commented under Sean’s tweet announcement.
“TAPPED IN!! And he got @youngthug going crazy on it too!” a second chimed in.
“Sean here to save 2020,” a third praised.
