African Union Blasts ICC for "Race Hunting" African Leaders

Ethiopia's Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has reportedly claimed that the system of the ICC is "flawed" because "99 percent are African." The upcoming trial of Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has sparked a global debate around his prosecution by the ICC and those charged in the past.

The African Union (AU) has denounced the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the "hunting" of Africans based on race.

The impending ICC trial of Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has sparked recent controversy on the court's process.

"Something is flawed within the system of the ICC and we object to that," Ethiopia's Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn told BBC News. He also added that out of those charged by the ICC, "99 percent are Africans." "The process has degenerated into some kind of race hunting."

The AU would raise its concerns with the UN, Desalegn said. Kenya's government has also petitioned the UN Security Council to halt Kenyatta's trial scheduled for July. In a letter written by Kenya's UN Ambassador Macharia Kamau, the prosecution was reportedly described as "neither impartial nor independent."

Kenyatta was indicted for allegedly initiating violence following Kenya's heated elections in 2007, which resulted in about 1,000 deaths. Earlier this year, he beat then-Prime Minister Raila Odinga in a close presidential election.
