Sheryl Lee Ralph Confronted Jimmy Kimmel After His Quinta Brunson Emmys Disturbance, Comedian Issues Apology
Emmy award-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph did not give her stamp of approval to Jimmy Kimmel who decided to awkwardly disturb Abbott Elementary creator and costar Quinta Brunson while she accepted her Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series at the 7th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday (Sept. 12).
Speaking at the Television Critics Association summer press tour panel on Wednesday (Sept. 14) Ralph called the moment disrespectful.
“Ooh, the disrespect!,” she said, according to PEOPLE. “I told him, too, to his face, and he understood.”
In case you missed it, Kimmel chose to play dead onstage while Brunson accepted her groundbreaking award. Although she urged the late-night host to stand up, the 54-year-old decided not to budge and laid beneath her feet during her speech.
Ralph added that she did quite understand what was happening at first.
“I was absolutely confused,” the actress shared. “I was like, 'I wish that man would just get up off the ground.... And then I realized it was Jimmy Kimmel.”
The 65-year-old also took home an Emmy at the show for “Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series” for her work on Brunson’s Abbott Elementary.
Kimmel also took a moment to apologize to Brunson, on the Sept. 14 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! where the Emmy winner was the special guest of the evening.
“I do want to explain this for those who may be confused by this,” said Kimmel. “That was a dumb comedy bit that we thought would be funny. I lost, and then I drank too much, and I had to be dragged out on the stage. And then people got upset. They said that I stole your moment, and maybe I did. I'm very sorry if I did do that — I'm sorry I did do that, actually. And also, the last thing I would ever want to do is upset you because I think so much of you, and I think you know that. I hope you know that.”
To which Brunson added to Kimmel’s apology to say, “I was honestly in such a moment of having a good time, like I won my first Emmy! I was up there happy, and I was wrapped up in the moment.”
