Parents of 9-Year-Old Rapper Lil Poopy Under Investigation
Hip hop is a young man's sport, but how young? Family members of 9-year-old Luie "Lil Poopy" Rivera Jr. are claiming that the Massachusetts authority's investigation into whether the aspiring rapper is the victim of child neglect is "racially-tinged."
Brockton police asked state and child welfare officials to look into the daily life of the pint-sized French Montana affiliate after he was featured in a local newspaper for his music. A video of Lil Poopy performing a freestyle over Montana’s hit "Pop That" is now going viral as some question the morality of his lyrics and surroundings.
"Whoever watched it probably doesn't understand rap," said Rivera’s attorney Joseph Krowski Jr., who described his client as "a thriving, well-adjusted fourth-grader with a good home life, good grades and musical talent."
Krowski is adamant that Rivera is not the victim of anything except an unfair investigation driven by cultural prejudice. "This isn't some child left alone that's not going to school,” Krowski said, "It all comes down to content in the videos, which is protected by the First Amendment."
The video in question features cameos from French Montana and Rick Ross and show Poopy being driven in a luxury car by a voluptuous model as he raps, "Riding in the backseat, cause that’s what bosses do." Decked in platinum chains and holding designer bags filled with cash, he does his best imitation of his mentors, while representing the "Coke Boy" lifestyle. The latter action has likely rubbed police in the wrong way.
"Coke ain’t a bad word, Coca-Cola," he spits defiantly. "Coke ain’t a bad word, it’s only soda." A particularly suggestive scene features the 9-year-old smacking the butt of a woman as she dances.
Police have not filed criminal charges but the Department of Children and Families will be looking into Lil Poopy’s home life. The investigation will include interviews with family members and officials at the child’s school.
