Serena Williams Says She Was Turned Away at Restaurant in Paris, Restaurant Responds

A spokesperson from the restaurant says it was fully booked.

Serena Williams called out The Peninsula Hotel in Paris after she and her family were denied a table at their fine dining restaurant.

On Monday (Aug. 5), the four-time Olympic Gold medalist took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to reveal that she, her husband, Alexis Ohanian, and their daughters, Alexis Olympia Jr., 6, and Adira River, 11 months, were turned away from the restaurant even though it looked empty. “Yikes @PeninsulaParis I’ve been denied access to [the] rooftop to eat in [an] empty restaurant of nicer places but never with my kids,” she wrote. “Always a first. #Olympic2024.”

Shortly after, the restaurant replied, “Dear Mrs. Williams, Please accept our deepest apologies for the disappointment you encountered tonight. Unfortunately, our rooftop bar was indeed fully booked and the only unoccupied tables you saw belonged to our gourmet restaurant, L’Oiseau Blanc, which was fully reserved.”

In a follow-up tweet, the spokesperson added, “We have always been honored to welcome you and will always be to welcome you again. The Peninsula Paris.”

The Peninsula Paris also issued a statement to TODAY that read, “In response to Mrs. Williams’ tweet, for whom we have the utmost admiration and respect, as we do for all our esteemed guests; we can only reiterate our deepest apologies for her perception of tonight’s situation.”

The statement continued, “Today, August 5th, our rooftop bar was indeed unfortunately fully booked, and the only unoccupied tables at that time belonged to our gourmet restaurant, L’Oiseau Blanc, which was also fully reserved tonight. She has always and will always be more than welcome with her family to The Peninsula.”

The retired tennis player and her family are in Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games.
