The Onion Apologizes for Insulting Quvenzhané Wallis
A joking insult about Quvenzhané Wallis has been retracted. After a staff member of the bitingly satirical newspaper The Onion referred to the 9-year-old Oscar-nominated actress as the c-word in a tweet, the paper’s CEO has issued an apology.
Around 11:42 p.m. EST Sunday, Twitter ignited with fury after a tweet was posted reading: "Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c--t, right?" Once angry responses began to be posted, the tweet was removed. By 1 a.m., along with the outrage expressed, Tweeters began demanding that The Onion apologize.
On Monday, Steve Hannah, the CEO of The Onion, posted an apology saying that, “No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humorless comment masquerading as satire.” He also stated that “immediate steps” were being taken to discipline the individual responsible for the tweet.
This hasn't been the only insult lobbed at Wallis. John Legend's girlfriend, Chrissy Teigen, recently tweeted the young thespian was sort of a brat. That insult, too, was met with anger.
